Bookies Slate “Almost Even Odds” On SlotMusic’s Failure

There are good odds SlotMusic == Betamax

With the blogosphere in a virtual and literal twitter today over SanDisk’s release of SlotMusic, a new innovative method of selling music through postage-sized stamped media cards, as is our usual practice we caught up with our favorite bookies to ask them what kind of odds they were giving on its success or failure.

Ted K. from downtown Deluth stated he’s giving a 1:2 odds for SlotMusic’s demise. “There’s just no way that SanDisk is going to be able to put a creative offering on the table. The momentum of the industry is moving against them. Did you read Om’s write up this morning? If he was any more right he’d never be able to turn left.”

Tony W. from Seattle agreed. “Those SanDisk guys must suck good dick — hey, can I say that? Well, tough, I just did. Anyway, they must do it good to get those record labels to agree to something like this. I hope they enjoyed it because its going to cost them millions. I give it 1:3 to fail at best.”

It looks like Jeffy S. from New Jersey wholehearted agrees. “These guys from SanDisk — I don’t know what they’re thinking. Or, to put it more succinctly, I’m wondering what the record labels are thinking. Haven’t they ever heard of ‘re-arranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic”? Hey — I loved that movie, by the way. And have you even seen this thing? 1:2 they’re going to the tank in 6 months or less. Why don’t you take me up on it if you think I’m wrong?”

Lastly Greg J. from Grand Rapids seemed to make it unanimous. “I’m not even thinking of offering a line on this one. Come on guys. You might as well put SlotDisk in the same bunch as the 8-Track, BetaMax, Zipdrive and HD-DVD. I mean come on. SanDisk ain’t no Microsoft to put in millions of dollars into a pet project they can’t hope to win ZUNE

As is customary with technology debuts which have a high risk of failing, the Museum of Technological Failures (MtP) is taking a keen interest with SlotMusic. Museum spokesperson Jill Huang made the usual talk show circuit, as she often does during tech releases, and she went on record saying the Museum has “incredible interest in this piece of technology, particularly since the odds of it succeeding are spectacularly and comically low. SanDisk, for all its good intentions, has released one heck of a whopper, and we look forward to SlotDisk’s addition to our growing archive of technology obsolete before its time.”
