Scoble prepping just before his cage match

For most of the attendees at BlogWorldExpo, the action happens during the day, during genteel and structured panels, networking events, and lunches. At night, however, only the very few get invited to the bloody cage matches that determine the real winners.

This year was one for the record books, as Robert “MeatMan” Scoble continued an 8 year run for the “All Media Personality” Cup, and brutally put down Louis “The Gentleman” Gray in the 21st round with a combination roundhouse-uppercut, followed by a face-crushing triple-knee. It was an exhausting day for the wiley veteran, as he defended the AMP Cup against 18 other competitors, including Brian “Power Roundhouse” Solis and Chris “Bragadoccio” Brogan.

Wile its widely known that Scoble has made his affectations known for Gray, it was only within close blogging circles that Scoble brought Gray on as his actual blogging and new media apprentice, showing him the secrets of the Dark Side. And so, at approximately 2:30am early this morning, the Cup culminated in a Sith-style finale fight for the ages, with Lord facing off against Apprentice.

Scoble’s power as a New Media Dark Lord are formidable. For years he has effortlessly kept the new media spotlight on himself, while growing a legion of growing fans, in spite of tepid and soul-crushingly boring videos that remain his signature work.

Its not quite known why Scoble chose to bring on an Apprentice this year, but its clear that under Scoble’s close tutelage Gray has grown in his own Force abilities, growing his fan base to a mind-boggling size in spite of his fairly narrow news-aggregator focus.

And yet, they weren’t enough. At approximately 1:20 into the second round, Scoble caught Gray with his guard down, and viciously finished him off while simultaneously bringing the crowd to its feet, with his patented “Seagate Slam”.

While some fans walked away disappointed in not seeing a more spectacular display of the Force between two disciples of the Dark Side, promoters had to gently remind them that while the New Media Force can accomplish a great many things it is also limited. True, electrifying stale arguments, compelling RSS fans to follow across different social networking, and crushing the windpipes of blog dissenters are but a few of their powers. But in real world fisticuffs, just like in real world dilemmas (from changing diapers to ending world hunger), new media powers can be shockingly feeble, and new media personalities, shockingly unknown.
